& the Celebration for the Arts
What was your role in the Celebration
for the Arts, and what was the event about?
Celebration For The Arts was a two day festival showcasing
the student's work in the Santa Monica/Malibu public schools. In all it
was to raise money for the school arts programs. Programs like drama,
dance, choir, band and art. The festival had lots of local vendors and
things and the teen celebs made it all the better. My role in the event
was the VIP Guest Coordinator. A women in the district first volunteered
to get celebs to come to the event, then she backed out and claimed that
no one would be interested in out event. That's where I stepped in and
got a talent contact list from someone in the Hollywood Reporter. I wrote
invites, made follow up calls, and before I knew it we had 18 teens coming
for the event.
How did you end up spending the day with
Jeremy Sumpter?
The chair of the event, and my mom told me that I could choose who I
wanted to escort because basically I got the celebs there. They all
knew Jeremy was my main insentive for even trying to get the teens there,
so they all knew I was going to be his "handler".
What was Jeremy's schedule for the
day, and what were some of the things he had to participate in?
Jeremy arrived at 1:30 where he was taken to the Green Room to be debriefed
on the day. After that, I took him down to the VIP Booth where he signed
autographs until he was needed in the Green Room for an interview. At
2:40 there was a photoshoot for the celebs. At 4:00 Jeremy had to go
introduce the Santa Monica High School Orchestra. After that he was
off to do whatever he wanted.
Did you get to speak to Jeremy,
and if so, what kind of things did you talk about?
It was hard to talk to Jeremy because I couldn't do so when he was at
the booth, and while walking around Mark was always there. When he first
walked in I turned to him and said "Hi, I'm Sarah, I'm your handler
today". Now I look back and think that's was stupid because he
might not know what 'handler' meant! Haha, well later I took him to
the booth and let him do his thing. When the photoshoot came I walked
him over and eventually they wanted me in the picture because of my
role in the event. They mentioned that it was my birthday, so when walking
back to the Green Room he wished me happy birthday and asked how old
I was. I told him I was 15 (which im not ). Up in the Green Room he
told me the brownies were good hehe. Later on before he was going to
introduce onstage he turned to Mark and said "Look it's that girl".
I turned and saw it was creepy girl (amanda). I turned to him and said
"Steven told me about her," he said "Yeah she's a little
scary," I played dumb and said "Is that your sister she's
talking to?" he said it was and I joked and said "Taking one
for the team right?" and he laughed and was like "I love you
Gigi!". Later on I gave him his Pacific Park pass and made sure
he was set and ok and little things like that. Now that I write it,
it doesn't seem like a lot, but when I did talk to him, it seemed way
cool.
After spending a day behind the
scenes with Jeremy, is there any advice you'd give him from a fan's
point of view?
Any advice I'd give him...hmmm. I mentioned he seemed a little distant
or stand offish, but I'm sure the fans there wouldn't think so. He just
seemed a little less down to earth than the rest. But I suppose you
have to be like that in a public place, to make sure you don't mess
up. But he was perfect otherwise.
Was it hard not being able to show
your enthusiasm around Jeremy, because you were trying to maintain a
professional profile?
Oh my god yes! I was dying for an autograph and a picture but I didn't
get one because I didn't want to seem like a fan. I also played dumb
a lot. Like I asked him how old he was and if that was his sister or
dad etc. It was funny in my mind, but really hard! When he first walked
in I was shaking, but I knew I'd be in huge trouble if I didn't keep
my cool. It was tough.
Was this Jeremy meeting different
from what you thought it would be, and if so, how?
Yes, in my dreams I hoped he'd talk to me more and we all have those
wild fantasies about him falling madly in love with us. But in someways
it was exactly how I pictured it. I knew he'd have to turn to me for
help, which he did when being brought to places and when he needed anything.
As
one of the fans that got to spend the most time around Jeremy, was there
anything about him that surprised you?
Surprisingly, no. He was the same Jeremy we know. He stumbles over some
things, but keeps his cool and is really sweet to his fans, especially
little kids. It was adorable seeming him with little kids. There was
one thing. Someone with him mentioned they had to leave a little early
to be somewhere at 5 o'clock, but yet at about 4:30 Jeremy went into
the park to go on rides. I thought that was weird because he used up
his pass that was good for all day rides in a short half hour. I thought
it was a bit of a waste.
Jeremy
participated in an interview. What was the interview for, and do you
remember anything specific about it?
The interview was for a documentary for For The Arts. I'm pretty sure
it's going to be used for promotional purposes. All I remember is Jeremy
talking about how he was the youngest kid in Kentucky to be in that
art contest thing. And he mentioned he drew on his walls as a kid. I
was not really listening to his interview because I was taking pics
and I was in the hall because they wanted a quite room. But soon I'll
watch the tape and tell you guys more if you want.
This is your 2nd time meeting Jeremy.
Was this meeting any more, or any less exciting because of that?
It's hard to describe. I knew he wouldn't remember me. The walk was
so long ago and I've told the story so many times that it doesn't feel
real anymore, so this was all new. I have to say the walk seemed more
fun because I was able to be myself.
If you had the chance to do it all
again, is there anything you would change about that day?
Tons of things. I would have been more me and less nervous. I would
have talked to him more. I would have gone into the park with him, if
I could have. Things like that.
Describe your day with Jeremy in
three words.
Busy, Nervous and AWESOME
